Construction Begins On 80-Unit Affordable Housing Project In Baltimore
By John Patti
Ground has been broken for Gibbons Commons, an 80-unit affordable housing project being developed by St. Agnes Hospital on the property that the hospital purchased 3 years ago on Caton Avenue across the street from the hospital.
The hospital purchased all 31 acres of what used to be the Cardinal Gibbons High School property 3 years ago.
Gibbons Commons will be a mixed-use community with affordable housing, recreational facilities and community services.
St. Agnes is in discussions with The "Y" of Central Maryland to run "Babe Ruth Field" in conjunction with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. They are also in discussions with Catholic Charities to look at renovating the original schoolhouse into grant housing and with Royal Farms to locate a store on the site.
The 80-unit apartment building will be constructed on what used to be the parking lot for the high school and is expected to be completed in 12 to 18 months.
The total Gibbons Commons project is expected to be completed in 2 to 3 years.
